If you've recently had bloodwork come back showing signs of insulin resistance, you probably have one big question: is this permanent, or can it actually be fixed? It's one of the most common questions I get asked when I'm going over lab results with patients in my Denver and Longmont, Colorado offices — and in many cases, the answer is genuinely encouraging. With the right lifestyle interventions, insulin resistance can often be reversed.

Here's what I want you to understand about why it happens, and exactly where I focus when I'm helping a patient reverse it.

What Is Insulin Resistance, Really?

Insulin is the hormone your body releases to move glucose (sugar) out of your bloodstream and into your cells, where it's used for energy. When your cells stop responding to insulin efficiently, your pancreas has to produce more and more of it to get the same job done. Over time, this cycle drives up circulating insulin levels, promotes fat storage — particularly around the midsection — and sets the stage for blood sugar swings, fatigue, and eventually type 2 diabetes if it isn't addressed.

The tricky part is that insulin resistance often develops quietly. Many of my patients feel "off" for months or years — fatigue after meals, stubborn weight that won't budge, sugar cravings, brain fog — before a lab ever confirms what's going on. That's exactly why I dig into this question so often during lab reviews: patients want to know not just what's happening, but whether it's something they're stuck with.

So, Can Insulin Resistance Be Reversed?

In many cases, yes. Insulin resistance is largely a lifestyle-driven condition, which means it's also largely a lifestyle-responsive condition. That doesn't mean it's simple or that willpower alone fixes it — there are usually multiple contributing factors that need to be addressed together. But when patients work through the right combination of nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and nutrient support, I regularly see meaningful improvement, and in many cases genuine reversal, on repeat labs.

Here are the key areas I focus on with patients:

1. Building Meals Around Protein, Fat, and Fiber

The foundation of improving insulin sensitivity starts on the plate. I coach patients to build meals around protein, healthy fat, and plenty of fiber — this combination slows the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream, which means a smaller insulin response is needed to manage it. Compare that to a meal that's mostly refined carbohydrate on its own: it spikes blood sugar quickly, demands a large insulin surge, and sets up the exact rollercoaster that drives insulin resistance over time.

This isn't about eliminating carbohydrates altogether — it's about the order and combination. Pairing carbohydrates with protein, fat, and fiber blunts the glucose spike significantly compared to eating them alone.

2. Strength Training — Not Just Cardio

One of the biggest levers I use with patients is strength training, and the reason comes down to basic physiology: insulin receptors live on your muscle tissue. The more muscle mass you have, the more "storage capacity" your body has for glucose disposal, and the more efficiently your body manages blood sugar overall.

This is part of why cardio alone often isn't enough to move the needle on insulin resistance the way strength training is. Building and maintaining muscle mass directly improves how effectively your body uses the insulin it produces, which means your pancreas doesn't have to work as hard to keep blood sugar in range.

3. A 10–15 Minute Walk After Meals

This is a small habit with an outsized effect. Walking for just ten to fifteen minutes after a meal helps blunt the post-meal glucose rise, because your working muscles pull glucose out of the bloodstream directly, independent of insulin. It's one of the easiest, lowest-effort interventions I recommend, and patients are often surprised at how much of a difference it makes on continuous glucose monitoring when we track it.

4. Prioritizing Sleep Quality

Sleep is one of the most overlooked factors in blood sugar regulation, and it's one I spend real time on with patients — not just "get more sleep," but figuring out why sleep quality isn't there in the first place. Poor sleep directly worsens insulin sensitivity, even independent of diet and exercise. If someone is doing everything right nutritionally but still struggling with blood sugar, disrupted sleep is often part of the missing piece. That might mean addressing sleep-disrupting hormone fluctuations, nervous system dysregulation, or lifestyle habits that are quietly undermining rest.

5. Managing Chronic Stress

Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated, and elevated cortisol directly raises blood sugar and drives insulin resistance over time. Rather than offering a generic "manage your stress" recommendation, I like to drill down with patients on what can actually be changed in their day-to-day lifestyle to reduce the physiological stress load — because a real, sustainable shift matters far more than a surface-level suggestion that doesn't fit someone's actual life.

6. Correcting Nutrient Deficiencies

This is a piece that gets missed constantly in conventional care, and it's one of the areas I focus on most closely. Certain nutrient deficiencies directly interfere with blood sugar regulation:

  • Chromium plays a direct role in insulin function — when it's deficient, blood sugar tends to fluctuate more significantly.
  • Vitamin A deficiency can impair how well the pancreas functions, affecting insulin production itself.
  • Berberine. Berberine is one of the most well-studied natural compounds for blood sugar support. It works in part by activating an enzyme called AMPK — often described as the body's "metabolic master switch" — which helps cells take up glucose more efficiently, similar to the pathway some prescription medications work through. It also supports healthier insulin sensitivity over time, which is exactly the pattern we're trying to shift with insulin resistance.     Manganese. Manganese is a trace mineral that's a required cofactor for several enzymes involved in glucose metabolism, including ones involved in how your body processes carbohydrates. When manganese status is low, this metabolic process doesn't run as efficiently, which can contribute to the same blood sugar fluctuations we see with other nutrient deficiencies like chromium.

  • Alpha lipoic acid (ALA). ALA is a powerful antioxidant that plays a role in how efficiently your cells use glucose for energy. It also helps reduce oxidative stress inside cells, which matters because chronic high blood sugar creates oxidative damage that can further impair insulin signaling over time — so ALA can help interrupt that cycle. It's also one of the nutrients I consider for patients dealing with nerve-related symptoms tied to blood sugar dysregulation, since it supports nerve health as well.

There are several other nutrient interventions that can meaningfully support blood sugar regulation depending on someone's individual labs. This is exactly why I don't take a one-size-fits-all approach — the right nutrient support depends on what's actually showing up deficient for that person.

For some patients, targeted supplementation is a helpful additional layer on top of these lifestyle interventions — not a replacement for them.
